Maria Lazarova Miteva was born on April 5, 1968, in the vibrant city of Sofia. Her journey into the realm of art began at the College of Performing and Screen Arts in Plovdiv, where she majored in Theatrical Set and Costumes, Makeup, and Wigs, graduating in 1987. Not stopping there, Maria delved into the sacred art of icon painting and defended her master’s degree in 1991. Her thirst for knowledge and diverse interests led her to study Business Administration at a private American college, broadening her horizons and adding a unique dimension to her artistic pursuits.

Maria’s artistic collaborations with her husband, Ivan Mitev, spanned from 1992 to 1997, with joint icon exhibitions held in New York and Germany, notably at the gallery of Hans Jürgen Ziegler in MÖSINGEN. Her iconic creations have graced exhibitions in prestigious venues like the church of St. James in London, Belgium, and the gallery of Altera Gallery. Maria’s artistic contributions extend beyond exhibitions; she has crafted the altars for four chapels in Bulgaria and her artworks adorn private collections across Bulgaria, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. One of her most cherished works is the altar for St. Timothy in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, painted in 2021.

In 2016, Maria embraced the digital age by establishing her art shop on Etsy, MariaArtStore. Here, art enthusiasts and collectors can explore her latest creations, including new icons, altars, and paintings by her talented son, Lazar Mitev.

Among Maria Lazarova Miteva’s diverse portfolio is “The Flying Dutchman.” Painted in 2003, this oil on canvas artwork measures 65/50 cm and marks Maria’s first and last venture into oil painting due to her allergy to chemical solvents.

Inspired by the legendary tale of the Flying Dutchman—a ghost ship doomed to sail the seas forever—Maria’s painting captures the essence of mystery, melancholy, and maritime folklore. The vivid colors and intricate details evoke a sense of awe, drawing viewers into the haunting narrative of the cursed ship and its spectral crew. Maria’s artistic prowess and ability to weave compelling stories through her artwork are evident. Her unique blend of traditional techniques and spiritual themes shines through.

The depth of emotion and symbolism in “The Flying Dutchman” reflects Maria’s profound understanding of both artistic expression and the human condition. Each brushstroke tells a story, revealing layers of meaning and inviting contemplation. Maria’s dedication to her craft and her commitment to exploring diverse themes and styles set her apart as a truly versatile artist.

In addition to her captivating paintings, Maria’s contributions to the world of art extend to sacred icons, intricate altars, and diverse mediums. Her innovative approach and willingness to experiment with different techniques showcase her adaptability and creative vision.

Through her art, Maria invites us to delve deeper into the realms of spirituality, history, and folklore. Her works serve as a bridge between the past and the present, challenging us to question our perceptions and explore new horizons.

Maria Lazarova Miteva’s artistic journey is a testament to her passion, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Whether crafting sacred icons, intricate altars, or captivating paintings, Maria’s work reflects her deep connection to spirituality, history, and the human experience. Through her art, she invites us to explore new horizons, challenge our perceptions, and embrace the beauty that surrounds us.
