Finally, for those who wish to be invited to a world of imagination, that of Paul King Wonka hit the theaters. Starring Timothée Chalamet, the origin story shows how Willy Wonka became the factory eccentric previously seen on screen in director Mel Stuart’s film. Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory (1971) and by Tim Burton Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). Because many of our favorite elements from the 1971 and 2005 films come from the imaginative design of Wonka’s factory, we were curious to see what Paul King’s design looked like. Wonka would match the beloved movie couple.

Wonka is a prequel while Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory e Charlie and the Chocolate Factory both loosely follow the same story, so some of the most memorable design elements shared between the first two films are entirely absent from the 2023 film. Scenes like Wonkavision’s all-white futuristic room, where Wonka shows off his ability to place a bar of chocolate inside a television for viewers to take out and consume, or the Wonkavator, which allows Wonka, Charlie and his grandfather to soar over the village at the end of both films, may not have a place in the story of Wonka, but the many innovations add so much to the texture of the older pair of films that they are missed in the newer film. With its many little drawers and light-up jars, the chocolate box that Wonka uses in the 2023 film to create his chocolates is a fun predecessor to the vast invention rooms, but it may leave fans of the other films wanting more.

The retro-futuristic, all-white Wonkavision room appears in the 1971 and 2005 films.
