Alexandra Jicol, a Romanian artist, was born and raised in Bucharest during a time of political oppression and deprivation of basic rights. Her childhood was a blend of two starkly contrasting worlds: the serene mountains, where she spent half her time, and the bustling city of Bucharest, where she roamed the halls of the Romanian television studios where her mother worked. This duality of experiences instilled in her a deep curiosity and a keen sense of observation, which continue to inspire her work to this day.

In her own words, Jicol describes herself as a simple observer and a traveler through life. Her goal is to look, hear, explore, learn, express, share, and appreciate all things, striving to do so with a nonjudgmental and tolerant soul. This philosophy permeates her art, which is a reflection of her innermost thoughts and observations.

Jicol’s work is characterized by a deep exploration of the human condition. She is fascinated by the ways in which colors, forms, and textures can be used to define states of mind and attitudes. Her art is an attempt to capture the essence of the soul and to convey a sense of the infinite. She believes that the human being is the most complex and passionate subject, and her art is a constant search for truth.

Over the years, Jicol has developed a unique style that combines classical painting techniques with other media, such as theater and music. She has also experimented with different materials and techniques, always striving to push the boundaries of her art. Her work is a testament to her relentless pursuit of expression, generosity, and sharing.

One of Jicol’s recent works is titled “A (PURE) PLACE TO REST.” This piece, which measures 27 inches by 27 inches, is a mixed-media composition on Japanese calligraphy fine paper mounted on wood support. It features acrylic, oil sticks, watercolor, and crayons. The title suggests a longing for a peaceful and tranquil space, a theme that resonates throughout Jicol’s work.

In conclusion, Alexandra Jicol is an artist whose work is deeply rooted in her observations of the world around her. Her art is a reflection of her innermost thoughts and feelings, and it is a testament to her relentless pursuit of expression and exploration. Through her art, she invites us to join her on a journey of discovery and appreciation of the beauty and complexity of the human condition.
