Hauser & Wirth announced the representation of New York artist Ambera Wellmann in partnership with Company Gallery in New York City. This collaboration marks a new approach to artist representation, where the blue-chip gallery works with a smaller gallery to help elevate the artist with their combined strength and resources.

Born in Nova Scotia in 1982, Wellmann is known for her technical mastery of oil painting, drawing inspiration from Renaissance and Baroque styles. He attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the Cooper Union. His work has been exhibited around the world, most recently at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, Italy; Stavanger Art Museum in Norway; and ICA Boston.

“Ambera possesses a remarkable combination of skills – she is an amazing technician, adept at the prerogatives and effects of historical art movements – which she uses to create a visual poetry that is both magnetic and unsettling,” said Marc Payot, president of Hauser & Wirth. . “She is willing to disassociate herself and us from the familiar, to represent a more complete human experience of the body and beyond it to the province of the spirit… It is an honor to join forces with an artist and a gallery that are known for their courage and originality”.

This new representation model, part of Hauser & Wirth’s “collective impact” initiative, emphasizes collaboration between galleries of different sizes. The model focuses on transparent and shared resources between galleries, with the aim of cultivating a stronger gallery ecosystem; the first collaboration of its kind, featuring Somali-born painter Uman alongside Nicola Vassell Gallery, was announced last month.

In January, Hauser & Wirth will present Wellmann’s work at the 10th annual FOG Design + Art in San Francisco. In addition, the gallery will host a solo exhibition for the artist in the fall of 2024 at the gallery’s SoHo space on Wooster Street. This will complement another exhibition held at the Company Gallery, nearby on Elizabeth Street.
