Vicky Tsalamata, an artist hailing from Athens, Greece, has recently unveiled her captivating new artwork titled “Dreamland.” This series of 12 lithographs, crafted using the Algraphy method and printed on an etching press, is a profound commentary on the human condition, both past and present, highlighting the sense of unfreedom and isolation prevalent in contemporary society.

What sets “Dreamland” apart is not only its thematic depth but also the intricate process behind its creation. Tsalamata embarked on a month-long residency at the prestigious Printmaking Studio in Dresden, Germany, known as “Dresden Grafikwerkstatt.” It was within this vibrant artistic environment that she meticulously developed and editioned each lithograph, infusing them with her unique perspective and vision.

Central to the concept of “Dreamland” is the symbolism of the Elbe River, which flows through Dresden. Having lived near the river and being deeply inspired by its ceaseless motion, Tsalamata perceives it as a symbol of freedom—a metaphorical “Dreamland.” In her interpretation, the river embodies the Heraclitusian notion of constant flux, representing the ever-changing yet inherently constant nature of existence. For Tsalamata, freedom is not merely an abstract concept but a tangible force, intricately intertwined with the flowing waters of the Elbe.

Each lithograph in the series is adorned with excerpts from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, “Dream-Land,” adding another layer of depth and introspection to the artwork. The use of traditional movable typography elements from the Dresden Printmaking Studio’s collection further enhances the fusion of past and present, tradition and innovation, within Tsalamata’s work.

“Dreamland” made its debut at the 3rd International Triennial of Graphic Art Livno 2023, held in Bosnia, where Tsalamata was invited to participate as a featured artist. Her series earned her the “Honorable Mention of the Third International Triennial of Graphic Art Livno 2023.

Curated by esteemed art historian Zelka Markov and hosted by The Franciscan Museum and Gallery Gorica – Livno, the exhibition provided a platform for Tsalamata to showcase her profound exploration of human existence and freedom. From June 26 to October 1, 2023, viewers had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the evocative world of “Dreamland”.

In conclusion, Vicky Tsalamata’s “Dreamland” stands as a testament to the artist’s ingenuity, creativity, and profound insight into the human experience. Through her craftsmanship and thoughtful thematic exploration, Tsalamata invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of freedom, existence, and the perpetual ebb and flow of life itself.
