In a contemporary art world dominated by digital innovation and virtual experiences, Lucy Looijen-Lavrijsen stands apart with a unique approach rooted in history. Known affectionately as “LUCY,” this Dutch artist has spent over three decades immersing herself in the worlds of archaeology and geology. Her art reflects an unyielding dedication to authenticity, simplicity, and a connection to the enduring beauty of the past.

Hailing from the serene town of Son en Breugel in the Netherlands, Lucy’s surroundings and heritage have deeply influenced her creative vision. Each piece she creates is imbued with a narrative—a reflection of her emotional depth and her ongoing exploration of humanity’s shared history.

Thirty years ago, Lucy established her painting studio, aptly named “LUCY.” It became more than a workspace; it was a haven for self-expression and discovery. Through her art, Lucy invites us to reconnect with a sense of stillness and to appreciate the interplay between life’s fleeting moments and its timeless truths.

    Exploring History Through Art

Lucy’s works are rich in narrative and texture, often drawing on ancient symbols and cultural artifacts. Her pieces “Lotus” and “Indonesia” exemplify her ability to intertwine personal experiences with historical influences, creating art that is both contemplative and evocative.

The painting “Indonesia” is inspired by the intricate bas-reliefs of the Prambanan temple in Java. This piece was commissioned by her mother-in-law, who wished to gift it to the Indian community at her nursing home. More than a simple homage to the temple’s artistry, the painting serves as a reflection of shared memories, familial bonds, and cultural respect. Through careful attention to detail and texture, Lucy conveys the timeless connections between people and places.

Accompanying “Indonesia” is a poem that reveals the layers of thought behind her work:

I dig up my soul and paint…

The leaves unfold one by one
    In shadows:
    Where we were sad,
    When it was hard
But also gave each other comfort.

    In highlights:
    Where we shared beautiful things,
    Had fun, laughed, and enjoyed.

    In colours:
    Soft shades, nuances,
    Where we found atmosphere,
    Warmth or coolness,
    And felt alive.

    Even in spices:
With which we gave life flavour,
    Tasted and shared food,
    In so many beautiful moments.

    Year after year,
    Very ordinary,
    But so special,

    Growing older,
    Until the end,
    And after.

This poem serves as both a lens into her creative process and an extension of the artwork itself. Each line mirrors the way Lucy layers her canvases—with emotions, experiences, and the interplay of light and shadow.

    “Lotus”: Reflecting Resilience

Lucy’s painting “Lotus” channels her admiration for nature’s ability to endure and thrive. The lotus flower, which emerges pristine from murky waters, symbolizes renewal and purity. Lucy captures this essence through a restrained palette and minimalist composition. The delicate petals appear to float, inviting viewers to reflect on their inner growth and strength.

To Lucy, the lotus represents more than just beauty—it embodies the journey of overcoming adversity to find clarity and purpose. This concept resonates deeply with her artistic journey, as she uses her canvases to uncover stories of personal and collective transformation.

    Art That Connects

Lucy’s studio, “LUCY,” is a testament to her belief in the transformative power of art. Her works are intimate and reflective, often finding resonance with people from diverse walks of life. They evoke a sense of connection—between past and present, between the artist and the observer. Her art does not shout; it speaks softly, encouraging viewers to pause and look inward.

Whether inspired by the timeless carvings of a temple or the ephemeral beauty of a lotus flower, Lucy’s paintings carry an authenticity that invites deeper engagement. They are windows into moments of quiet contemplation and reminders of the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Lucy Looijen-Lavrijsen’s art bridges worlds—personal and universal, ancient and contemporary. Through her work, she offers a gentle reminder to cherish the stories that shape us and to find beauty in life’s simplest forms. It’s an invitation to slow down, dig deeper, and rediscover the profound connections that make us human.
