Vera Deans, an artist, stands as a polymath, weaving a vibrant tapestry of creativity across diverse mediums. A qualified fashion designer, mixed-media artist, printmaker, digital artist, and amateur photographer, Deans thrives on experimentation, exploring non-traditional ideas that often manifest as bizarre yet captivating artworks. Her recent endeavor, titled “Divine Feminine,” marks a poignant chapter in her artistic journey.

“I am a visual storyteller, guided by a love for colors, textures, and a thirst for knowledge,” Deans shares. Her multifaceted skills encompass collages, digital art, mosaics, polymer clay, resin jewelry, and more. Art, for Deans, is not merely a pursuit but an integral part of her soul—a cathartic expression of emotions and self.

Having faced the challenges of caregiving, Deans found solace in her art amidst the responsibilities of caring for her husband and son with Autism/Aspergers. Her journey through part-time art classes and diverse short courses reflects a relentless passion for learning and honing her craft.

Deans’ latest masterpiece, “Divine Feminine,” unveils a striking portrayal of an ethnic woman adorned in intricate clothing, jewelry, and a resplendent headdress. The inspiration stems from the rich ornamental traditions of African culture—a testament to Deans’ fascination with diverse global cultures.

Delving deeper, the artwork transcends aesthetics, channeling a profound message. Deans, attuned to the struggles of women in patriarchal societies, aims to elevate their status through her art. The adorned woman exudes a regal aura, a symbol of divinity and strength, challenging the devaluation and persecution often faced by women in certain parts of the world.

The piece is an original hand-printed block print, crafted in the traditional Lino Cut style. Deans utilized a large Gel Block to carve the ethnic woman with meticulous attention to detail. The color palette, comprising brown, red-brown, and blue acrylic inks, accentuates the decorative patterns, creating a visual feast for the observer.

Deans’ personal journey weaves seamlessly into her art. As a full-time caregiver, the need for self-expression becomes a driving force, offering her respite amid life’s challenges. The loss of her husband and the daily care of her son amplify the emotional depth present in her creations.

As she navigates the intricate dance between colors, textures, and cultural inspirations, Deans remains a beacon of resilience. “Divine Feminine” not only captures the essence of her artistic prowess but also echoes the resilience and strength inherent in the artist herself.
