In the face of adversity, some individuals find solace and strength in unexpected places. Walter Fernandes, an artist who rediscovered his love for art and painting, is a testament to the transformative power of creativity and determination. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in November 2016, Walter embarked on a challenging journey that led him to not only manage his condition but also to actively promote Art Therapy for Persons with Parkinson’s.
Walter’s story is one of resilience, perseverance, and the healing capacity of art. Seven years since his diagnosis, he has not only faced the initial challenges head-on but also turned his passion for painting into a force for good. With a strong willpower, medication, and exercise, Walter effectively delayed the progression of Parkinson’s in the initial years. However, the combination of early retirement, the global pandemic, and medication side effects posed new challenges, taking a toll on his well-being.
It was only earlier this year, in the midst of his journey towards recovery, that Walter rekindled his love for art. Despite the obstacles he faced, he found solace and inspiration in the act of painting. “I am now passionately painting with Parkinson’s,” Walter proudly declares, embodying the spirit of someone who refuses to let adversity define his life.
Walter’s journey with Parkinson’s has led him to collaborate with the World Parkinson’s Program (WPP) for their Annual Gala 2024. This event, Passport of Hope Gala , aims to support the global Parkinson’s community. Walter’s work will be featured in the silent auction, with part of proceeds going towards the WPP’s initiatives. Among his pieces showcased will be “Celestial Dance” and “Graceful Companions.”
In “Celestial Dance,” Walter captures the awe-inspiring moment of a solar eclipse. The painting portrays the graceful movement of the moon as it crosses in front of the sun, creating a striking contrast of dark and light hues. The artist skillfully employs brush strokes to add texture and depth, enhancing the ethereal beauty of the celestial event.
“Graceful Companions” depicts two elegant swans gliding on a tranquil pond, symbolizing the unwavering support provided by caregivers to individuals with Parkinson’s disease. The vibrant colors of the water and surrounding flora evoke hope and resilience, honoring the silent heroes who offer comfort and companionship to those navigating the complexities of PD.
Walter’s dedication to his craft and his advocacy for Art Therapy exemplify the power of creativity in overcoming adversity. Through his artwork, he not only expresses his own journey but also inspires others to find strength and solace in the transformative nature of art. As Walter continues to paint through Parkinson’s, his story serves as a beacon of hope for individuals facing similar challenges, reminding us all of the healing power found within creativity and determination.
