Mathias Mornat was born in Paris and is now 57 years old. For over two decades, he has dedicated himself to painting, evolving into a self-taught artist with a diverse skill set. After training in advertising layout design at the Estienne School, Mathias mastered various painting techniques, including ink, gouache, acrylic, and oil. His work has been showcased primarily in France’s Champagne region, Lisbon in Portugal, and recently in Basel, Switzerland, at the Art Project Basel during Art Basel week.

Mathias Mornat’s artistic journey is a testament to the power of self-education and passion. Over the past 20 years, he has developed a unique style that melds traditional techniques with his own imaginative flair. His background in advertising layout design has undoubtedly influenced his approach to composition and color, allowing him to create works that are both visually captivating and meticulously crafted.

One of Mathias’s acrylic paintings, rendered using both a brush and a palette knife, measures 50 cm by 70 cm. This piece is a personal representation of an imaginary port at sunset. The painting vividly accentuates the contrasts between four main colors—red, black, white, and yellow—resulting in a memorable visual impact. The bold use of color and contrast is a hallmark of Mathias’s style, drawing the viewer into a world that is at once familiar and fantastical.

Mathias’s technique involves layering and texturing, which brings a sense of depth and dynamism to his work. The palette knife, in particular, allows him to create intricate textures that add a tactile quality to the painting. This method not only enhances the visual appeal but also invites viewers to engage with the artwork on a more sensory level.

Exhibiting his work in various locations across Europe has allowed Mathias to connect with a diverse audience. In the Champagne region of France, his art has been well-received for its vibrant energy and emotional resonance.

Beyond the technical aspects of his work, Mathias’s paintings often convey a deeper narrative. The imaginary port at sunset, for instance, can be seen as a metaphor for the transition between different phases of life, the blending of day and night reflecting the dualities inherent in our experiences. The interplay of light and shadow in his work echoes the complexities of human emotions and the ever-changing nature of our inner landscapes.

Despite his self-taught background, Mathias’s work demonstrates a high level of skill. His ability to seamlessly integrate different painting techniques speaks to his dedication and continuous learning. Each piece he creates is a culmination of years of experimentation and refinement, showcasing his progress as an artist.

Mathias Mornat’s art is a testament to the beauty of self-discovery and the power of creative expression. Through his use of bold colors and textured techniques, he invites viewers into his imaginative world, where everyday scenes are transformed into extraordinary visions. His dedication to his craft showcases his commitment to sharing his unique perspective with the world. As he continues to experiment, his work promises to engage and inspire those who encounter it. Each piece he creates is not just a painting but a narrative that resonates with viewers, making his art meaningful and lasting.
