Andrey Tsers, an artist based in Brooklyn, NY, delves into stylization in his creative process. He believes stylization bridges one’s initial impression of the world with their expression of that experience, inspiring others and influencing cultures. Language and geometry exemplify stylization, where symbols and shapes represent meanings and visualize space-time relationships. Tsers’ art focuses on three primary forms: the square, triangle, and circle, exploring their relationships through specific series.

One of Tsers’ projects is the “Muses” series, which pays homage to the nine muses of Greek and Roman mythology. Each muse represents a different art form, and Tsers’ installations capture the essence of these mythological figures through geometric stylization. The series consists of nine installations, each dedicated to a specific muse.

A standout piece in this series is the installation dedicated to Euterpe, the muse of lyric poetry. This installation is composed of five elements: a central CLAY SOURCE MODEL and four geometrically stylized two-sided paper sculptures. The central clay model serves as the reference point for the entire installation, with each paper sculpture representing a layered profile of the clay model from different quarter views. The outer sculptures are arranged around the central model, allowing viewers to compare the geometric stylizations with the original clay form.

Tsers’ approach to this installation highlights the dialogue between 3-D and 2-D representations. The paper sculptures, with their two-sided geometric drawings, create a visual conversation between the three-dimensional clay model and the two-dimensional stylizations. This interplay challenges viewers to consider how different perspectives and dimensions can alter their perception of the same subject.

Tsers’ artistic process is methodical and deeply rooted in his conceptual framework. He begins with a thorough exploration of the primary geometric forms, sketching and experimenting with different combinations and arrangements. This initial phase is crucial for Tsers, as it allows him to develop a clear vision of the final piece.

Once the concept is solidified, Tsers moves on to the creation of the clay source model. This model serves as the foundation for his installations, providing a tangible reference point for his geometric explorations. The process of sculpting the clay model is both intuitive and deliberate, with Tsers making constant adjustments to ensure that the model accurately reflects his vision.

The next phase involves the creation of the paper sculptures. Using the clay model as a guide, Tsers carefully constructs the paper sculptures, paying close attention to the geometric stylizations. Each sculpture is meticulously crafted, with Tsers ensuring that the two-dimensional drawings on each side align perfectly with the three-dimensional form of the clay model.

Tsers draws inspiration from a variety of sources, both historical and contemporary. His work is influenced by the minimalist movement, which emphasizes simplicity and the use of fundamental forms. The works of artists such as Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian, who explored the use of geometric shapes in their compositions, have also had a significant impact on Tsers’ artistic development.

In addition to visual art, Tsers is inspired by literature and philosophy. The writings of philosophers like Immanuel Kant and Gilles Deleuze, who explored concepts of perception and reality, have informed Tsers’ approach to art. He sees his work as a form of visual philosophy, using geometric shapes to explore complex ideas and concepts.

Andrey Tsers’ work is a testament to the power of stylization and the infinite possibilities that arise from the manipulation of primary geometric forms. His meticulous approach and deep conceptual framework result in installations that are both visually striking and intellectually stimulating. Through his exploration of squares, triangles, and circles, Tsers invites viewers to engage with his work on multiple levels, encouraging them to consider the relationships between different dimensions and perspectives.

In a world where reality is constantly shifting and evolving, Tsers’ art provides a moment of clarity and reflection. His work reminds us of the beauty and complexity that can be found in the simplest of forms and encourages us to look beyond the surface to uncover the deeper meanings hidden within.
