Loïc Gouzer, the man behind the most expensive work of art sold at auction: $450 million savior of the world at Christie’s in New York in 2017 by a certain Renaissance master, he says he knew the sale would reach new heights when he discovered the name of his taxi driver that fateful day. Talking to Baer Faxt PodcastGouzer says, “It was the day of the auction and I could barely eat breakfast… The stars have to align… I ordered my Uber, the Uber says I’ll be there in three minutes, the driver’s name is…. Leonardo.” Gouzer, the auction house’s former co-chairman of postwar and contemporary art, says he was so convinced this was a good omen that he begged the driver to stay while he put on his tie. “I was afraid I’d lose it, because please don’t cancel me,” he begged. Thank goodness the driver wasn’t named Michelangelo.
